Research Award Programs
Funding great research begins with a focus on people and projects. Our Research Roadmap guides our work to address the critical knowledge gaps, advance discovery, and encourage collaboration within the single ventricle field and beyond.
We offer funding opportunities to support academic and clinical investigators to pursue relevant topics to single ventricle heart disease. Our programs aim to foster outstanding science across disciplines, fields, and career stages — and provide resources for our awardees to succeed.
Research Programs
OPEN
Single Ventricle Research Fund (SVRF)
Our flagship funding program — the Single Ventricle Research Fund (SVRF) — is an annual research award program that supports foundational studies aimed at improving outcomes for individuals with single ventricle heart disease. By addressing the organ- and multi-organ-level complications and clinical sequelae that drive long-term morbidity and mortality, the SVRF seeks to close critical gaps in understanding and treatment, and accelerate progress toward better, more predictive, and preventative care.
Applicants may apply for either the Independent Investigator or Career Development tracks. The Independent Investigator Track is open to both tenure and non-tenure track independent investigators, including instructors, assistant professors, and tenured faculty. The Career Development Track is open to postdoctoral fellows or postdoc equivalents who hold mentored positions. Independent Investigator Track applicants can apply for up to $600,000 in direct costs, and Career Development Track applicants may apply for up to $300,000 in direct costs, over 3 years.
In its sixth cycle, the SVRF welcomes foundational research that is directly relevant to improving outcomes for individuals with single ventricle heart disease.
Award Amount
Up to $600,000 in direct costs for Independent Investigator Track awards, up to $300,000 for Career Development Track awards, over three (3) years. Indirect costs up to 10% will be provided in addition to the total funded amount.

Translational Accelerator: AV-CTIP Device Innovation Award
The Additional Ventures Translational Accelerator was created to break through the “valley of death” in single ventricle translational research. By removing early-stage roadblocks and equipping investigators with funding and strategic expertise, the Accelerator helps translate high-potential discoveries to clinical realities.
Virtually no medical devices are specifically designed or engineered with single ventricle patients in mind. The Additional Ventures-CTIP Device Innovation Award is designed to change that. By fueling bold, early-stage device concepts purpose-built for single-ventricle patients at every stage of treatment, this Award tackles this gap head on and accelerates life-saving innovation where it is needed most.
Award Amount
Up to $1M in milestone-driven funding, up to approximately 3 years in total, with access to advising, services, and support throughout the award term.
Eligibility
U.S.-based academic institutions and companies are invited to apply. At minimum, teams must include a coordinating project lead and project manager, and appropriate clinical and technical expertise to support the success of their asset.

Catalyst to Independence Award
Support for the next generation of scientists means investment in the future of the field.
The Additional Ventures Catalyst to Independence Award is a transition award that supports the next generation of researchers, catalyzing their careers and efforts to solve the biggest questions in single ventricle heart disease and related fields.

Up to $1M over up to 5 years
Eligibility
Applicants must have earned a PhD, MD, DO, or doctoral equivalent more than 1 year prior to the application due date.

AHA/AV Collaborative Sciences Awards in Single Ventricle
Together, the American Heart Association (AHA) and Additional Ventures (AV) have established the AHA/AV Collaborative Sciences Awards in Single Ventricle Heart Disease (CSAs) to support multidisciplinary, multi-institutional research teams addressing key knowledge gaps in the clinical sequelae of single ventricle heart disease and its treatment paradigm.
We encourage a forward-thinking approach to research that is not constrained by long-held hypotheses and dogma, and that is conducted in an environment of trust. We seek to establish a multidisciplinary network of approximately five teams who are enthusiastic about working transparently in a highly collaborative network – a team of teams sharing related, yet unique scientific goals, who prioritize innovation over safe bets, and who are willing to risk testing unconventional ideas. In addition to generous research funds, the CSAs provide dedicated project management support for granted teams, as well as community development support through all-expense- paid biannual meetings and other networking opportunities.
Award Amount
Up to $2.25M direct costs to be utilized over 3 years
Eligibility
Each team should consist of two to four members, including co-PIs with expertise from at least two different disciplines.

Expansion Award
Our Expansion Award enables teams to add new single ventricle–focused approaches and directions to their current work by providing a one-time grant of $50,000. This small but mighty grant is open to both new and established investigators within the single ventricle research community – and has an efficient submission and award process spring-boarding these studies forward, faster.

Principal Investigator(s) (PIs) who hold doctoral degrees (e.g., PhD, MD, PsyD, or equivalent) and are listed as a PI on a parent grant.

Life Sciences Research Foundation: Postdoctoral Fellowship
We believe in supporting the next generation of scientists. We partner with the Life Sciences Research Foundation to support outstanding postdoctoral fellows who are making waves in basic science and advancing fundamental knowledge. Interested fellows should apply through the LSRF website.
Award Amount
$67,000 per fellow per year for three (3) years
Eligibility
Applicants must apply within 5 years of receiving their PhD or MD degree
