New R&D Program on Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement

Additional Ventures is launching an ambitious R&D program in early 2022 to rapidly accelerate our understanding of ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) and build solutions for the scalable, cost-efficient, environmentally safe, and equitable deployment of OAE.

The program builds on a recently published report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), which acknowledges the ocean’s enormous carbon dioxide removal capacity and highlights OAE as a particularly scalable approach. However, the NASEM report stresses that the current knowledge base is “insufficient to inform societal decision making,” calling for significantly increased R&D.

To launch the R&D program, Additional Ventures and a consortium of philanthropic partners will publish two Requests for Proposals (RFPs) to support scientific and technological innovation in OAE.

  • The first RFP is for proposals to build a large research effort to systematically assess the conditions under which Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement can verifiably, safely, and permanently remove CO2 from the atmosphere at scale.
  • The second RFP is for proposals to develop prototype hardware solutions that cost-efficiently deploy Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement at scale and monitor both intended and unintended impacts.
